A dedicated shopkeeper has been applauded for her commitment to her community.
Margaret Ferguson has owned and run her store, MM Ferguson, in Alyth, near Blairgowrie, for 53 years.
That long service has been recognised today as she was named as the 2025 Scotland Loves Local High Street Hero for Mid Scotland and Fife.
Awards judges heard that “while other businesses have come and gone, she has been a reliable source of quality produce”.
Speaking about her award, Mrs Ferguson, 85, said: “I was shocked to learned that I’d been put forward because I don’t feel as though I’ve done anything special. It’s quite humbling.
“All I’ve done is come to work and run my shop, which is something I enjoy. It’s like a hobby to me. It doesn’t feel like work.
“Some people say my shop’s like a community centre. I’m here and if people want to come in for a chat, then they can do that. Many of my customers are friends. I’ve had many happy years here.”

Organised by Scotland’s Towns Partnership (STP), the Scotland Loves Local Awards recognise and reward all that’s great about the nation’s towns and neighbourhoods and the work to ensure they become stronger and more sustainable.
STP Chief Officer Kimberley Guthrie said: “People make places – and people like Margaret are part of the fabric of our communities.
“The years of commitment she has shown to Alyth makes her a very worthy recipient of our High Street Hero award for Mid Scotland and Fife.”
Spearheaded by STP and supported by the Scottish Government, Scotland Loves Local is the movement encouraging people to create a better future for their community by choosing local. This is the fifth year in which the awards have been held.
