Yarn-tastic: Kirkintilloch craft shop staff are High Street Heroes

A special shop credited with “enriching its community one stitch at a time” has been honoured as a hero of the High Street.

Stitch & Yarn – a fabric, yarn and haberdashery store – has been described as the “creative heart” of Kirkintilloch, East Dunbartonshire.

And its commitment to sustainability, along with work including that to bring people into the town centre, forge friendships and enhance skills has seen the Cowgate venture named as this year’s Scotland Loves Local High Street Hero for West Scotland.

Judges heard how Stitch & Yarn  is “more than just a shop” with a goal of inspiring customers to create beautiful things while building lasting connections.

As well as being a shop, the venue is an events space where people mingle, share ideas and find support from fellow crafting enthusiasts.

“The team really pride themselves on being a genuine hub for local crafters,” their award nomination said.

“They believe in thoughtful creation, encouraging customers to purchase only what they need for their project, ensuring every metre of fabric and every ball of yarn is cherished and transformed into something beautiful.

“A visit to our shop is more than just a quick stop; it’s a special experience designed to inspire the next unique garment. Customers can take time to explore the vibrant colours, appreciate intricate patterns, and truly feel the luxurious textures of the carefully curated selection. Staff are there to help every step of the way.”

Celebrating their High Street Hero status at Stitch & Yarn in Kirkintilloch

Reacting to the award news, the team at Stitch & Yarn said: “We are absolutely thrilled – and a little overwhelmed – by the award. We are deeply honored to receive this wonderful recognition.

“When we first opened our doors, our mission was clear: to build more than just a shop. We wanted a warm, welcoming space where people could come together to mingle over shared passions. Our goal is that every visit helps to inspire a new project, and that the quality supplies we offer empower you to create something beautiful and lasting.

“This award belongs entirely to our community. To every person who has popped in for a ball of yarn, joined a workshop, or simply came in for a bleather – thank you. Your support, your creativity, and your dedication to keeping the joy of crafting alive are what truly make Stitch and Yarn a hero in Kirkintilloch

“We look forward to many more years of stitching, yarning, and sharing this journey with all of you. Thank you to the judges and everyone who nominated us.”

Stitch & Yarn is also part of Kirkintilloch Business Improvement District, which supports the wider Scotland Loves Local drive for people to help build a better future for their communities by supporting local businesses.

Organised by Scotland’s Towns Partnership (STP), the Scotland Loves Local Awards recognise and reward all that’s great about the nation’s towns and neighbourhoods and the work to ensure they become stronger and more sustainable.

STP Chief Officer Kimberley Guthrie said: “The team at Stitch & Yarn are worthy High Street Heroes – creating a business which prides itself as not just being part of the community, but at the heart of it. They are a great example of why choosing local is so important.

“Through Scotland Loves Local we are celebrating the fact that people make places – and it’s people like those involved at Stitch and Yarn who make a really positive difference to the places we call home.”

Spearheaded by STP and supported by the Scottish Government, Scotland Loves Local is the movement encouraging people to create a better future for their community by choosing local. This is the fifth year in which the awards have been held.
